IMPORTANCE OF TREE TRIMMING

Trees that aren’t regularly trimmed could risk various types of damage and disease, as well as becoming infected with insects and other decay organisms. Damaged, dead or diseased branches need to be trimmed to avoid these risks! In addition, it’s important to removing low-hanging growths that could become hazardous

TYPES OF TREE TRIMMING

+ PRUNING

There is no better maintenance than getting your trees pruned and trimmed. If your trees are regularly pruned, we can keep an eye out for bugs or disease. We will also help your trees thrive by regular pruning. Pruning a tree involves selectively trimming limbs and branches that may be absorbing vital nutrients needed by the tree’s core in order to maintain overall tree health. By removing these outer elements, the nutrients can remain concentrated in the trunk and main branches, keeping the tree more vital.

+ TREE TOPPING

Tree topping helps mitigate overgrowth of the tree by removing top branches. This can make the tree safer by reducing its susceptibility to wind damage due to height. Tree topping might also be necessary to comply with homeowner association covenants or standards. When performing tree topping, it is important to do some strategic shaping as well, to keep the tree looking attractive.

+ DEADWOODING

Deadwooding a tree means to remove any dead wood from the interior or exterior of the tree. This will help prevent limbs and branches from falling on objects or people. Deadwooding may also help improve tree health by arresting further decay of the tree.

+ RAISING CANOPY

To “raise the canopy” of a tree involves removing lower branches. This is normally done to provide more ground clearance for walking, sitting, or driving beneath the tree. It may also be done to improve the shape or appearance of the tree.

+ THINNING

A process in which foliage is removed from the interior of the tree to reduce overall tree weight in the central portion of the tree. It may also be done to reduce wind resistance so breezes can pass more easily through the tree.

Crown thinning is the selective removal of branches to increase light penetration and air movement through the crown of the tree. Crown thinning opens up the foliage of a tree, reduces weight on heavy limbs and helps retain the tree’s natural shape. In most cases, no more than one-fourth of the live foliage should be removed when thinning a tree.

When crown thinning is necessary the arborist might write, “crown thin to remove excess interior branches ½” diameter or larger”.

A big part of shaping a tree involves crown thinning.

Branches can be removed that are way too close to other branches. Those types of branches tend to be shaped at a V-angle directly from the base instead of having a better U-shape. If a branch does not have decent structure strength, or they are crossing branches, those can be removed too. Ultimately, the thinning of the crown can control the shape of a tree and make it look better.
